CCDI Wildcats: Making Real the Almost Impossible!
It was a heaven-like moment for CCDI Sorsogon being declared as the PRISAA Champion 2009 of Basketball (men) in Region 5 after it outshined the Camarines Sur selection team (Ateneo - UNC – USI – NCF)l, Albay-Legazpi (AUL – DWCL) and the Camarines Norte Team held on December 4 – 7, 2009 in Daet, Camarines Norte.
The proud athletes of PRISAA Sorsogon basketball
CCDI Wildcats, being the representative of Sorsogon in PRISAA was composed of 11 key athletes from CCDI Sorsogon, two from SIT and one from SLMCS with Coach Ron Jalmanzar.
Prior to PCCL, CCDI Wildcats is a back to back champion of the coveted BICCS (Basketball Intercollegiate Championship of Sorsogon) for 2008 and 2009.
Our strenght... TEAMWORK!
Having achieved such success was not an easy climb for team CCDI Sorsogon.
I used to remember how hard it was of establishing a basketball team considering that sports is not really meant for business of our school. I admit, ours’ is a computer school whose facilities and resources are devoted to IT development.
However, having seen the significance of it in establishing a better linkage to the community and what it can do to our school, I insistently and riskily devote myself of establishing a good one for the branch despite of the disagreement of my fellows in the organization.
That’s what I am! I enjoy doing things when there is a challenge. My measurement of success is having started a program from a scratch and seeing it grow and become valuable… THAT’S a REAL SUCCESS!
In 2006, I presented my sports program to the faculty and administration of our school. Although other faculty members are willing, some gave me hesitant support for they are not into sports.
Former PBA Ginebra superstar, Dante Gonzalgo was CCDI Wildcats’ first coach but did not stay long due to some difficulties.
I asked CCDI Panthers coach Benz Quilang to assist me in Sorsogon but due to the distance of the branch (almost 4 hours travel ), he then gave up.
With my persistence, he admitted the offer. I told him I do not know how to coach basketball but I know how to train him become a good coach.
When I organized the Regional Friendship Game in Sorsogon, they were placed at the bottom. But we did not stop until we placed 3rd in the Basketball Inter-Collegiate Championship of Sorsogon which I founded also in the province of Sorsogon sometimes in October 22, 2007.
In 2008, I took seriously of organizing the Wildcats team. We created a coaching team whose terms are on voluntary basis. A very good coaching staff was organized. With Coach Ron are his assistant coaches Jun jun Soreta (he owns the largest electronic shop in the city – I could say the most reliable in electronics repair) , Gilbert Fullon ( a freelance networker). Charles Jarabejo, also give immeasurable and unselfish contribution to the team as the team’s assistant manager.
Then we replaced non-functional players. Out of 15 athletes, we retain only three of them. They are (1) Jay Diesta (captain ball), (2) Louie Doctor and (3) Jeffrey Pacatan.
With this composition, team CCDI were able to get the 1st championship trophy in BICCS Season 2, with Aemilianum College as the runner-up.
They competed in PCCL South Luzon Elimination and was placed third after the Wildcats defeated the Ateneo de Naga University Golden Knights, which was coached by our friend, Noli Ayo.
In PRISAA Provincial Elimination, team CCDI was defeated by ACI Knights in a single point held in the former home court – ACI Gym.
The Wildcats accepted the defeat and did cooperate with ACI in the composition of TEAM SORSOGON for the Regional PRISAA. But the joint force of ACI and CCDI did not work in bringing it to the championship.
ACI Knights walked-out in Naga prior to its match against Cam. Norte leaving only five players of CCDI and one BMMCI. Yet, during the match the six players were able to win double digits against Our Lady of Lourdes College of Daet even without the Knights. How did it happen? Teamwork effectively worked in them.
The crisis in the team starts! Slasher- shooter John Mark Jacob, and a leaper-point maker guard - Angelo Guelas decided to transfer in their local school in Bulan, the Solis Institute of Technology due to: (1) financial reason; (2) the two athlete’s academic interest is not in IT but in Criminology being offered by SIT.
Wildcats’ forward Andro Diaz was also recruited by St. Claire College, Sta. Mesa, Manila. Hanzel Arevalo stopped in college. Bench players Doctor and Pacatan graduated in their course.
Yet, the coaching staff did not give up. They recruited new players. Michael Adamos, an ace volleyball player of SSC, Brendan Gacias (22 years old), a young nursing graduate of Aquinas University, Jefferson Fungo (Sta. Magdalena) and Jeric Padrique as a point guard trainee joined the Wildcats.
With these, the composition of team CCDI entirely changed. It needs new training program.
THE COACHES and THE TRAINING
The team face difficulty where to practice. Its former venue, Pangpang open court is no longer advisable for night practice due to frequent bad weather that hampers the regular schedule of the training.
Thanks to Bobet Lee, the provincial sports coordinator for his assistance and good heart of allowing the Wildcats use the Provincial gymnasium free of charge during vacant time.
Bobet’s contribution to the team can not be denied for without him, it would be a hassle for the team to look for a quality practice venue. With him, quality training for the team is being given by Coach Ron and his staff.
In case of gym’s unavailability the team consumed their time in their work-out activities for free at Rows of Iron Fitness Gym owned by Mr. & Mrs. Dan Dunglay who is an avid supporter of the Wildcats. Thanks to Rows of Iron for developing the athletic physical prowess of the athletes – FREE OF CHARGE!
The athletes train everyday, Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 11:00 am. Coach Ron provides quality training that would help increase their skills and that athletes could properly use their talents in basketball.
Coach Ron training is focused on (1) conditioning; (2) developing the athletes’ varsity character and attitude; and (3) maximizing talents, potentials and skills of the basketball athletes using scientific approach of training.
CCDI is so lucky having volunteer coaches such as Jun Soreta and Gilbert Fullon who contributed a lot on assisting coach Ron with the best game plan and strategies.
Coach Ron has this reputation of being the FIST & ROD of the Wildcats. If Coach Jun is the brain of the team, Coach Gee is the heart. Such combinations of three coaches made them a winning team-up. Bobot Jarabejo is our negotiation man. I commissioned him to talk to the players in terms of difficulty. He performed as the volunteer assistant manager. I had the fatherly role to the team. I always see to it that I have time to listen to all of their sentiments and suggestions. I reward those who did best and punishing those who did wrong. The Wildcats is like a big family with me as their “TATAY” as the players and sports enthusiasts called me.
2009 is a heyday for Wildcats reaping the back to back championship for the coveted Basketball Inter-Collegiate Championship of Sorsogon for 2008 & 2009, Champion in PRISAA Provincial Elimination and as the 2nd best collegiate team to UNC (Naga) in South Luzon Area defeating Bicol College (Albay), Calayan College (Quezon) and Amado Cope College (Tabaco).
Just recently, CCDI Sorsogon bagged the PRISAA regional championship in basketball. It was first in the history of PRISAA Bicol to have Sorsogon champed in basketball men outshining the combinations of Giant universities and colleges in each province, Cam Sur Team (nine from Ateneo de Naga, three University of Nueva Caceres, 2 Unibersidad de Sta. Isabel and one Naga College Foundation).
Last year, Team UNC won bronze in basketball. Such accomplishment was the highest achievement of the Bicol Region in PRISAA basketball.
Will Wildcats exceed the performance of UNC and bring home the first gold in basketball for Bicol?
Well, let’s wait and pray.
CONGRATULATIONS, CCDI WILDCATS! You are a history maker of collegiate basketball in Sorsogon.
